Embracing Uncertainty: The Key to Career Confidence

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

— Charles Darwin

In early February 2020, I was deep in a job search and found myself navigating my first virtual interview. It started with three pre-recorded questions from a bot, and if I passed, I’d advance to a live Zoom interview. I was excited, prepared thoroughly, and made it to the next round—a virtual interview with two people. A few days later, I received a job offer for a role that required a home office and regular virtual meetings.

At the time, the job market continued to change fast, and remote work still felt unfamiliar and isolating. I turned the offer down.

Just a month later, COVID-19 shut everything down. The job market slowed dramatically, and uncertainty loomed. I questioned my decision. Had I made a mistake? The future felt unpredictable and, frankly, scary.

But I kept going. I kept applying. Eventually, I landed a position in career services, which—like everything else—had shifted entirely online. I met with students virtually, planned career events through Zoom, and learned to work in a fully remote world. And to my surprise, I began to appreciate it.

Today, I continue to work virtually as a career coach and business owner. What once seemed isolating has become an integral and energizing part of my career. The rise of AI and digital tools has only deepened the impact I can make with clients.

Looking back, that seemingly wrong decision opened doors I couldn’t have imagined. Adapting to change—both the kind we choose and the kind that chooses us—has been essential to my growth. Embracing uncertainty has taught me resilience, humility, and how to stay teachable. Whether it’s asking for help, taking risks, or finding virtual co-working partners, learning to navigate the unknown has strengthened my confidence.

In a world that continues to change rapidly, our ability to adapt isn’t just a survival skill—it’s the foundation for long-term fulfillment.
