When Gratitude Feels Hard in Job Loss, Career Confusion, or Transition

Hands holding a warm coffee mug, representing micro-gratitude and small moments of calm during job loss or career transition.

What is micro-gratitude?

Micro-gratitude is simply noticing one good thing in your day. It doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be real. These small pauses can help steady you when everything feels up in the air.

“Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” – Melody Beattie

I’m hearing from people who have been laid off and feel unsure about their career direction.  Many of them are facing a difficult job search. If that’s where you are right now, it’s completely understandable. Gratitude feels distant! Losing a job or feeling lost in your career is heavy, especially around the holidays.

When life feels unsettled, our minds naturally slip into scarcity thinking. We focus on what we don’t have, what didn’t go as planned, or the unclear path ahead. Scarcity thinking narrows our perspective and drains our energy.

This is where micro-gratitude can offer a gentle shift.

Micro-gratitude won’t fix everything, but it can open just a bit more space to see what might be possible.

And possibility matters! It is a reminder that another path, option, or idea could be ahead, even if it’s not clear yet.

As we move through the holiday season, try noticing one good thing each day. Small moments can bring calm, clarity, and a sense of direction when you need it most.

I feel a sense of micro-gratitude with my clients who trust me with their stories, you inspire me daily. And to my colleagues and partners who support and collaborate with me, your encouragement means so much.
